Agnes Kagure Holds Meeting with Mike Sonko, Gains Momentum in Building Winning Coalition for 2027
Merely two years following the 2022 General Election, various political candidates vying for different positions have been establishing their presence in their respective strongholds.
The Nairobi gubernatorial seat, currently occupied by Governor Johnson Sakaja of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has garnered considerable attention from numerous aspiring candidates.
Sakaja decisively defeated Polycarp Igathe of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.
Igathe was introduced by the faction following negotiations and influence from Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Party, and Uhuru Kenyatta, the former president and leader of the Jubilee Party.
As a result, Tim Wanyonyi, the current Westlands MP, was persuaded to abandon his own aspirations.
Up to now, Raila has openly acknowledged that removing Wanyonyi had a negative impact on the faction and benefited Kenya Kwanza.
This led to Margaret Wanjiru abandoning her goals and endorsing Sakaja’s candidature.
Tim Wanyonyi, Agnes Kagure game plan
From the beginning, Kagure, who made the decision to run as an independent candidate, clearly expressed her intention to compete for the office of Nairobi governor.
Politics254.com has discovered that Kagure’s interactions with politicians who have shown interest in governing Nairobi are driven by a great determination—to become the first female governor of Nairobi through an election.
Approximately one week after their meeting with Wanyonyi to discuss the challenges imposed on their political parties in 2022, Kagure had a meeting with the former governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonko.
Sonko, who was recently acquitted of criminal charges by the court, had planned to run for the position of Mombasa Governor. However, a court decision resulted in his disqualification.

As a result, he decided to openly endorse President William Ruto’s camp, even though he had previously indicated interest in Uhuru and Raila during the 2022 competition.
“I am catching up with my good friend, Mjamo Mike Sonko. The ever-jovial second governor of Nairobi shared that it was while Manchester City played against Liverpool recently that he got a full recollection of the 2022 elections and how we differently went through frustrations.
“He concluded that after the 1-1 draw from the match, he realised that competing and not winning isn’t the end but rather a pause to strategise and win in a mightier way. He also expressed his admiration for the progress I’m making to empower women in finance and leadership and is committed to enhancing women’s empowerment projects through his SRT foundation,” Kagure posted on X.
Many Kenyans expressed varied opinions regarding the potential for Kagure to run on a collaborative ticket with Wanyonyi.
They also discussed her recent meeting with Sonko, where she mentioned his commitment to following Ruto’s advice of selecting running mates of the opposite gender to promote gender balance in leadership.
“He further promised to take up the call by the president and run a joint ticket with a strong and visionary woman leader in his next political quest, God-willing. Better days ahead, mazuri yaja (good things are on the way),” said Kagure, in a thin-veiled message reiterating her quest for Nairobi leadership..
Kagure recently asserted that Nairobi was prepared to have its inaugural female governor through an election, and she put herself forward as a candidate for the role.
