Baringo Stage Anti-William Ruto Protests Over Haiti Mission Amid Rising Insecurity
President William Ruto is encountering backlash within his Rift Valley stronghold due to a surge in bandit assaults.
In a demonstration on Wednesday, February 14th, a faction of the county’s leadership spearheaded by Governor Benjamin Cheboi condemned the approach of the Kenya Kwanza government in addressing the matter.
Simon Kiplagat, the MCA for Kabartonjo Ward, rebuked Ruto for his intentions to deploy Kenyan police officers for a peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
Kiplagat cautioned the president that unless the escalating insecurity is addressed, the region would retract its backing in 2027.
“President, don’t send soldiers to Haiti, send them to Tiaty. There is a Haiti here in Tiaty. Soldiers should not go to Haiti; they should come to Tiaty. Mr. President, we love you, but if you don’t stop this insecurity in Baringo, I’m telling you, 2027 you’ll watch on Viusasa. Mr. President, we love you, but you must also love us,” he said.
The ward representative highlighted that Ruto had failed to fulfill his promise to the county for more than a year since assuming office.
He reminded the president that during the 2022 General Election campaigns, he had pledged to tackle the banditry menace in his initial days in office.
Kiplagat lamented that despite their love and support for the head of state, it was not being reciprocated, emphasizing that bandits were causing fatalities among residents.
“We tell our president that we elected you as the people of Baringo 100%, and we will not accept our people to continue being killed under your government. You came to Baringo and promised that within 100 days after taking office, the issue of insecurity would end. But now it’s been 1 and a half years, and our people are still being killed. Mr. President, the people of Baringo love you wholeheartedly, but we will not continue to love you if our people continue to die,” he added.
