Busia Senator Omtatah to File Petition Blocking Housing Levy
On Monday, March 18, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah declared he will sue to stop the increased Housing Levy.
Omtatah stated that he was preparing a petition to halt its implementation after the National Assembly and Senate passed the Affordable Housing Bill.
“Yes, we are challenging it. We are in the final stages of preparing the petition,” he told Kenyans.co.ke.
Omtatah added that the petition would discuss Senate modifications to the Bill on Tuesday, March 12.
The amended version passed the National Assembly on Thursday, March 14.
Nation Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah promised to work hard to pass the Bill before mid-March.
This aimed to restore 1.5% wage deductions for all employed Kenyans to fund Affordable Housing.
The bill requires mediation, which would have taken longer if the National Assembly had not adopted Senate modifications.
President William Ruto postponed signing the Bill into law until Monday, March 18.
After rescheduling, the Head of State will sign the Bill on Tuesday.
Omtatah will petition Ruto to stop collecting the payments. Legal action may begin at the High Court and reach the Supreme Court.
Kenyans will be deducted the Housing Levy until the court issues conservatory injunction to stop the deductions.
