Concerns rise over behaviour of Senegalese new President Diomaye Faye’s 2nd wife
The emergence of two females next to Senegal’s head of state, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, is a notable break from Senegalese custom.
This remarkable situation at the Palais de la République has prompted public concern and debate.
Absa Fall, the fifth president’s second wife, married President Diomaye barely a month before his arrest.
However, questions have been raised about her connections to the world of showbiz.
Unlike the first lady, Marie Khone Faye, who keeps a quiet profile, Absa Fall, a Dakar native with a French heritage, is more active on social media.
Some critics have questioned her use of social media sites such as Snapchat and her connections in the entertainment world.
Patriots have expressed alarm on social media regarding Absa Fall’s engagement in the entertainment industry.
They emphasized the need of having a second woman who exemplifies prudence and self-effacement, so safeguarding her husband’s image and the Pastef project’s integrity.
Some influencers have even uploaded images of Absa Fall on Snapchat, showcasing their close friendship with the second lady, which has alarmed many.
In response to public complaints, Absa Fall has been urged to change her conduct and better line with Senegalese norms.
The focus on prudence and self-effacement emphasizes the necessity of upholding the dignity and reputation of the presidency.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44, became Senegal’s youngest president when he was inaugurated on Tuesday after his release from incarceration as a political prisoner.
In his swearing-in ceremony, which was accompanied by his two wives, the former tax inspector promised to tackle corruption and solve young unemployment in the country.
“The election results reflect a profound desire for change. Senegal will emerge as a nation of hope, characterised by peace, an independent judiciary, and a strengthened democracy,” Faye said.
Faye was released from jail less than two weeks before the March elections, as part of a political amnesty proclaimed by departing President Macky Sall. This also marks Faye’s first excursion into political office.
