Court Issues Directive on Alleged Death Threats to Okiya Omatatah Issued by Ruto

The High Court has directed Inspector General Japhet Koome to permit Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah to provide a statement regarding purported death threats attributed to President William Ruto.

Justice EC Mwita issued this directive today in response to a case filed by Omtatah on December 29, 2023.

“It is hereby ordered that the pleading be served,” read part of the court order.

Additionally, Justice Mwita of the Milimani High Court has instructed Inspector General Koome to submit a response within 14 days from the time of receiving the notice.

The case will be brought before the court on January 24, 2024, for additional guidance. Omtatah asserted that on December 19, he was expelled from Nyanchwa Police Station by police officers when he sought to accuse Ruto of making death threats against critics of the Housing Levy.

Following an unsuccessful attempt to persuade officers to allow him to provide a statement, Omtatah proceeded to Mosocho Police Station, where he faced a similar rejection.

Consequently, he resorted to seeking legal intervention from the Judiciary as a final option to assert his rights and exert pressure on the police.

In the court filing, Omtatah claimed that Ruto had made threatening remarks against him and other stakeholders during an event in Mosocho, Kisii, on December 16.

According to Omtatah, Ruto warned that he would persist in his efforts to establish his legacy and, in doing so, invoked a metaphorical sword from his predecessor, indicating his determination to handle those opposing the housing levy.

“You know I was given a sword. Do you think it’s for cutting vegetables? It’s for dealing with all these crooks here. I will uproot them completely, and Kenya will move forward,” Ruto stated.
