Cracks in ODM as Joho criticizes plan to ‘discipline’ Junet Mohamed
Former Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy party leader, Hassan Joho, has criticized an alleged initiative to take action against Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.
Following reports that the Raila Odinga-led party has issued a show-cause letter to the MP, who was once considered a favorite for the opposition leader, Joho has expressed his support for Junet.
In response to the rumors, Joho used his platform on Sunday to denounce the purported plan as “completely unnecessary and uncalled for!” According to sources, ODM is contemplating removing Junet from his minority whip position due to his consistent absence from party meetings and functions.
Junet is reportedly required to justify why he should not face consequences for his perceived waning commitment to the party.
As outlined in Standing Order No. 2 of the National Assembly, the Minority whip is responsible for managing the party’s business in the legislative body, ensuring members attend crucial sessions, and promoting the party’s agenda.
Junet, once a prominent figure in Raila’s inner circle and a key player in the 2022 elections, has taken a more low-key approach since the ODM leader’s presidential loss.
While Junet was previously outspoken and actively defended the party, he has become less visible, especially during the ODM’s recruitment efforts.
Concerns about Junet’s dedication to the party have surfaced among ODM members.
However, Joho and other ODM leaders, including Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, oppose the move to penalize Junet.
Alai has labeled the plan an intrigue by officials affiliated with the Kenya Kwanza government and has vowed to fiercely oppose those targeting Junet, predicting a challenging battle for them.
“Kenya Kwanza agents in ODM have started their schemes with their “show-cause ” letters. Hey, agents of Kenya Kwanza, this is ODM. You are yet to get the baptism by fire. Don’t underrate ODM, please. Mtashangaa!” he said in a post on the X platform Sunday.
Could Junet’s noticeable non-participation in ODM events serve as a legitimate basis for removing him from his influential position within the party?
