Details of Uhuru & Museveni Meeting Days After Call With US Secretary of State
On Wednesday, ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta convened with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to address East African Peace concerns.
Reports highlighted their focus on the escalating tensions in the region as the primary discussion point during this significant encounter.
Announcing the meeting, Museveni stated, “This afternoon at State House Entebbe, I met with the Facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process, H.E. President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta to discuss the regional mandate alongside recent developments in Eastern DRC”.
A few days following a call from US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to Uhuru on Saturday regarding East Africa’s leadership matters, this meeting took place.
The Department of State’s statement highlighted Blinken’s emphasis on Kenya’s pivotal role in mediating peace efforts among East African nations.
“The Secretary emphasized the valuable role of regional leaders in assisting the DRC and Rwanda in implementing commitments made in their discussions with Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines and other senior U.S. officials,” read part of the statement.
Additionally, the former President received praise for his commendable efforts in fostering peace, particularly regarding the escalating tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Recent developments have seen disagreements between DRC and Rwanda concerning security issues, with Rwanda facing accusations of harboring and financially supporting M23 rebels. Rwanda has vehemently denied any involvement with the rebels, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.
Furthermore, Burundi abruptly closed its border with Rwanda without prior notice, exacerbating tensions in the East African region.
Following his retirement as Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta now serves as the Peace Facilitator for East African Countries. In this capacity, he is tasked with spearheading reconciliation efforts among nations embroiled in diplomatic disputes.
