DJ Joe Mfalme breaks silence after arrest for allegedly beating DCI officer to death
Popular disc jockey Joe Mfalme, real name Joseph Mwenda, has spoken out following his arrest in connection with the killing of a senior Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer in an assault in Kiambu County.
On March 16, Mwenda and his bouncer, driver, and photographer allegedly attacked Kabete Police Station Deputy DCIO Felix Kelian in Kikuyu Market.
The DJ was arrested over the weekend, along with three Kikuyu Police Station officials.
Mwenda said in a statement on Sunday that he and his staff had been working with investigators since the occurrence, which they called regretful.
“We express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and all those impacted by this unfortunate incident. DJ Joe Mfalme and his team have been in close collaboration with the investigative agencies since the occurrence of the incident,” read the statement posted on social media.
Mwenda stated that they will collaborate as needed, and that they trust God and the general authorities to undertake a thorough and transparent investigation to “uncover the truth”.
“Given the ongoing investigations and the sensitive nature of the matter, we shall refrain from making any further statements at this time,” the deejay, who is presently detained at the Kabete Police Station, added.
According to reports, Mwenda, his bouncer, driver, photographer, and a lady were travelling home at 4 a.m. after playing at the Kikuyu club on that fateful Saturday.
According to police, an altercation erupted after a “non-injury traffic accident” involving inspector Felix Kelian and the DJ’s vehicle in the club’s parking area.
The officer apparently hit the DJ’s car from behind, but before the issue was resolved by traffic cops from Kikuyu Police Station, the DJ and his crew allegedly attacked Kelian.
It is said that three officers arrived on the spot, detained Kelian, and transported him to Kikuyu Police Station, where Mwenda and his crew joined but were subsequently permitted to depart without filing a statement.
The DCI officer complained of abdominal pain and was initially brought to Langata Hospital before being transferred to Nairobi West Hospital, where he died on Friday.
According to a medical assessment, Kelian sustained bladder injuries and was unable to pass pee for approximately four hours when he arrived at the hospital.
It identifies blunt abdominal trauma as the immediate cause of death.
Mwenda was arrested alongside three other police officers: Khadija Abdi Wako, Sammy Rotich Cherono, and Agnes Kerubo Mugo.
They are among six individuals arrested in connection with the crime, and police are looking for more, including a woman who was purportedly present at the site.
