DP Gachagua Takes on CJ Koome After Illicit Brew Kills 13
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua criticized Chief Justice Martha Koome on Friday following the deaths of 13 individuals in Kirinyaga due to consuming expired alcohol.
Addressing the issue in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua blamed the courts for permitting the release of the main suspect linked to the lethal brew.
“I want to appeal to Chief Justice Martha Koome. You are part of the Mt Kenya community, how come you allow people to continue selling poisonous alcohol to our children,” Gachagua stated.
“I want to ask Lady Chief Justice Martha Koome and the judges, now that you released the suspect behind the killer brew 15 times, and now that people have died, what will you tell the people.”
Gachagua asserted that the suspect had purportedly been detained in court on 15 occasions, yet on every arraignment, the courts granted him release. The Deputy President additionally called upon the courts to exhibit patriotism, particularly when issuing rulings that they acknowledge will impact the public.
Gachagua also alleged that despite the endeavors made by Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru to curb the illicit alcohol trade in the area, the effectiveness of her actions was undermined by the actions of the courts.
“I want to urge our judges to be patriotic and reasonable. How do you apply the law to the detriment of the people that you serve?”
“Governor Waiguru has tried curbing alcohol menace but her efforts have been watered down by rogue officers and people at the court.”
The Deputy President thus urged local artists to utilize their talent to raise awareness and contribute towards eliminating the menace, warning of the potential devastation it could wreak on the entire community if left unchecked.
“I am telling you, and I want to speak when I am in Kirinyaga, had the president and I not made a conscious decision to fight illicit brew in this region, in another ten years the entire of our population in this region will have been wiped out,” Gachagua noted.
In issuing a final warning to all chiefs within Kirinyaga County, the Deputy President pledged to organize a meeting with all local authorities to tackle the issue head-on.
