Drama as Azimio Politicians Clash Over Nakhumicha’s Impeachment
Following Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s recent move to impeach Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, a divide emerged within the Azimio alliance.
A group of Members of Parliament from the Western region have come out to support the health CS, calling the impeachment resolution dead on arrival.
Babu Owino’s motion seeks to remove Nakhumicha from the position of health CS due to ineptitude and egregious violations of the country’s health regulations.
However, Babu Owino’s proposal has prompted heated resistance from several MPs, particularly those in the Azimio coalition, who now want him to withdraw the motion.
“There is no way we are going to allow our fellow MPs to impeach her, so the impeachment idea and motion is not there,” stated Tindi Mwale, Butere MP.
According to Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, there is no compelling basis to impeach CS Nakhumicha.
Savula argued that the doctors’ strike was a labor dispute and had nothing to do with Susan Nakhumcha’s employment as a health secretary.
“We know she is the only minister representing us in the national government and we want her to stay there and perform. No one should use the excuse of a strike, a strike is a labour matter,” Savula noted.
The fast action came only three days after Babu Owino filed an impeachment petition against CS Nkahumicha.
According to the member, Kenyans have been unable to receive medical treatment since March 15, when the doctors’ strike began.
“Pursuant to Article 152(6) of the Constitution as read with Standing Order 66, I wish to notify you of my intention to move a Special Motion for the removal of the Cabinet Secretary for Health from office on two grounds,” read part of the notice.
Nakhumicha was also accused of ineptitude for failing to end the strike, which had already reached its third week.
Babu Owino also criticized the Health CS for failing to follow the doctors’ Collective Bargaining Agreement. Nakhumicha has repeatedly threatened to fire the striking doctors if they do not return to work.
