Former Sports CS Rashid Echesa Arrested over alleged extortion targeting Governor Barasa
On Thursday, March 28, Rashid Echesa, the former Sports Cabinet Secretary, was apprehended on suspicion of his purported involvement in an extortion syndicate that specifically targeted Governor Fernandes Barasa of Kakamega.
According to reports, the former CS was apprehended by police officers stationed at Muthaiga Police Station on Thursday afternoon.
Subsequently, he was transported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) located on Kiambu Road for the purpose of subsequent interrogation.
Officers said that Echesa had been evading the police track.
As per the legal representatives of Echesa, namely Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta, the law enforcement officials failed to furnish any pertinent details pertaining to his arrest warrant, including the specific allegations brought against their client.
His adversaries referred to his arrest as a political witchhunt.
“We have not been told the amount that was involved in these allegations. There is no complainant and if you look at the circumstances, Echesa was the initial person to file a formal complaint,” Omari stated.
“Even though it is Easter, we will file an application in court since it’s a matter of life and death to ensure he is released.”
The aforementioned occurrence follows the legal proceedings of an individual who is purportedly associated with Echesa, who stands accused of extorting Ksh240 million from the governor of Kakamega.
The individual in question faced charges on two separate occasions, namely conspiracy to conduct a criminal and forcibly demanding property.
The handler was alleged to have spearheaded a criminal organisation that compelled and demanded the sum from Barasa.
The individual refuted the allegations and was subsequently granted freedom on a bond of Ksh2 million, accompanied by a corresponding surety.
