Gachagua Issues Direction on Meeting Uhuru Ahead of 2027 Polls
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua welcomed the prospect of a meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta aimed at resolving the political enmity that led to the two falling out in the run-up to the 2022 presidential election.
Responding to inquiries from media at his Karen office, the DP suggested such a meeting, adding that such scenarios are common.
Gachagua emphasised that Mt Kenya’s unity will always take primacy, and as such, he was always willing and ready to engage with other leaders to further this cause.
During the interview, Gachagua said that he and former President Uhuru Kenyatta had an enraged discussion.
He stated that he and the Former President had been friends for seventeen years but had a falling out for two years prior to the 2022 election, which he regretted.
Before becoming the Mathira Member of Parliament, Gachagua worked as Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal aide, but the two broke out when Rigathi began supporting President Ruto.
Furthermore, the Deputy President apologised to Mama Ngina Kenyatta, noting that the treatment she received from some United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MPs because of her support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga was deplorable.
“The politics that we had during that period were not good, and I would never want us to play that kind of disrespectful politics again,” stated Gachagua
Gachagua also stated that he was satisfied with the NADCO report, despite his previous doubts about the conclusions.
He also acknowledged his initial scepticism and dissatisfaction when the President approached opposition leader Raila Odinga for a meeting, noting that he was uncertain of the outcome.
“I was only content after learning that Kimani Ichung’wah and Cecily Mbarire would be in the talks as I know they have our people’s best interests at heart,” stated the Deputy President.
Gachagua also stated that he hoped to unify the Mt. Kenya area, ensuring that it speaks with one voice and avoids the divisive politics that have plagued the voting bloc.
