Gachagua Outlines Government’s Strategy to Combat Goons in Protest
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on Kenyan youth to cease protests, promising that the government will take decisive action against goons infiltrating demonstrations to cause chaos.
Speaking at his late sister Leah Wangari’s funeral in Laikipia, Gachagua urged the youth to embrace dialogue, assuring them that President William Ruto had heard their concerns and mechanisms were being developed to address the issues raised.
“Now that you have been heard, a mechanism is being worked on how the issues that you think need to be addressed will be addressed,” Gachagua stated.
He emphasized the need to end the protests, asserting that the security agencies would then be able to deal firmly and decisively with the criminals exploiting the situation.
Gachagua acknowledged the proactive stance of Kenyan Gen-Z in seeking better governance.
His remarks came in the wake of widespread protests across various towns in Kenya on Tuesday, which were marred by violence and property destruction as goons looted and vandalized amidst the chaos.
One notable incident in Mombasa involved a civilian firearm holder who shot two people, escalating the unrest.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki also vowed that the government would handle those taking advantage of the protests to cause anarchy.
His statement echoed Gachagua’s call for a more secure and orderly approach to addressing public grievances.
However, Gachagua’s statements come amid a politically tense period for him. Speculation is rife about a rift between him and President Ruto, following Gachagua’s criticism of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
During a recent roundtable interview at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto dismissed the rumors and addressed Gachagua’s demand for NIS Director General Noordin Haji to resign.
Gachagua had criticized Haji for failing to properly inform President Ruto about public sentiment regarding the controversial Finance Bill, 2024, before it was pushed through Parliament.
Despite these political challenges, Gachagua remains steadfast in his call for an end to protests and a focus on constructive dialogue to resolve national issues.
His appeal to the youth is seen as a critical step towards stabilizing the country and ensuring that legitimate grievances are addressed without resorting to violence and disorder.
