Ghana Bestows President Ruto with Country’s Highest Accolade
Ghana gave President William Ruto its highest distinction, the Companion of the Order of the Star of the Volta, during a spectacular state dinner on Wednesday evening.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo bestowed the coveted award to President Ruto, hailing him as an example of a new generation of African leaders dedicated to maintaining the ideals of accountability and due process for all people, regardless of their social standing.
President Akufo-Addo praised Ruto’s unrelenting commitment to upholding these ideals, especially in the face of complex political circumstances.
“Under your leadership,” President Akufo-Addo proclaimed, “Kenya has become a shining beacon of a nation governed by the rule of law.”
He also praised President Ruto for restoring Kenya’s worldwide relevance, highlighting successes such as low inflation, a thriving start-up environment, and programs targeted at increasing Kenyan residents’ access to housing and healthcare.
This appreciation of President Ruto’s leadership coincides with his diplomatic attempts to develop connections with other African governments.
The Order of the Star of the Volta is characterized by its finely crafted insignia, which contains a medal in the form of a seven-pointed star, 45 mm in diameter, hung on a ring and worn with a ribbon collar.
In addition, winners of the award are presented with a ribbon, a necklace, and a rosette, with a smaller version available for ceremonial occasions.
Depending on the class, the emblem is worn on either the right or left shoulder. The highest class, Companion, is made of 18-carat gold.
Its opposite side depicts a symbolic image of the Volta Hydro Scheme, with yellow and white gold representing the damming and control of the river, as well as the electricity generated by it.
The opposite side has a composite design showing emblems of freedom and justice, as well as the raised relief text ‘Companion of the Order of the Volta’.
During his visit to Ghana, President Ruto obtained support for the Azimio la Umoja Coalition and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga’s quest to head the African Union Commission (AUC).
President Akufo-Addo affirmed Ghana’s support, marking an important step in Ruto’s drive for regional support.
It was a momentous event since it was President Ruto’s first formal appeal for support in West Africa after his reunion with erstwhile political rival Raila Odinga.
Ruto had earlier sought support from neighboring nations after officially backing Odinga’s bid for the AU presidency, with only Rwanda publicly promising its support.
