Gunshots and Goons: Security Tightened as Meru Assembly Debates Governor’s Fate
The Meru County Assembly is set to debate the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza amid heightened security measures.
The assembly premises are heavily guarded by police, led by North Imenti Sub County Police Commander Aden Ario, in response to reports that a group of goons planned to invade and possibly torch the building.
Throughout the night, gunshots were heard as some goons attempted to breach the assembly premises, only to be repelled by the substantial police presence.
This heightened tension highlights the contentious nature of the impeachment proceedings.
Governor Mwangaza, facing a significant political challenge, has limited support within the assembly. Reports indicate that only about 20 out of the 67 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) back her.
The impeachment motion was tabled by Deputy Majority Leader Ziporah Kinya on three grounds: gross violation of the constitution and other laws, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
In an effort to halt the impeachment process, Governor Mwangaza filed a petition at a Nairobi High Court seeking conservatory orders. However, her efforts might be in vain as the political momentum against her gathers pace.
The impeachment saga took a surprising turn last week when the initial motion was withdrawn. The mover of the motion filed a withdrawal notice, which was subsequently debated and ratified by the assembly members.
Speaker of the Assembly stated, “This assembly approves the request by the deputy leader of the majority party, Zipporah Kinya, to withdraw the notice of motion for the removal of the office of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by impeachment whose notice was issued on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.”
The primary reason for the withdrawal was procedural; the motion was out of time since such a motion must be debated and sent to the Senate within ten days of the notice.
Additionally, withdrawing the motion rendered the ongoing court case moot as it lacked a subject matter.
However, the respite was brief. Just a day after the withdrawal, Deputy Majority Leader Ziporah Kinya filed a new impeachment motion, reigniting the political turmoil.
As the assembly prepares to debate this new motion, the atmosphere remains charged with uncertainty and anticipation.
The heavy police deployment underscores the gravity of the situation, ensuring that the proceedings occur without external interference or violence.
All eyes are now on the Meru County Assembly as it deliberates on the fate of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
