The neurosurgeon, aged 74, who received training and practiced in southern France, became engaged in Haitian politics in the early 2000s.
During this time, he became leadership of a movement that opposed the then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Following the removal of Aristide, Henry joined a group supported by the United States, which played a role in selecting the interim government.
In June 2006, he was appointed as the director-general of Haiti’s Ministry of Health and subsequently assumed the role of chief of staff.
In this capacity, he played a crucial role in overseeing the government’s efforts to address the catastrophic earthquake that occurred in 2010.
Mr. Henry is currently marooned in Puerto Rico due to the obstruction of armed criminal groups, which has stopped him from returning to his residence.
He had been in power since the killing of the prior president in July 2021.
After the meeting in Kingston, the Caribbean community chair and President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, stated that they recognised his resignation after the transitional presidential council was formed and an interim prime minister was appointed.
In recent days, the streets of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, have been under the grip of heavily armed gangs, who are demanding the resignation of the unelected prime minister.
