“Have you ever heard of an assault case handled by EACC?” – Peter Salasya Responds to EACC Summons
Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya, has accused his political opponents following the issuance of a summons by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Addressing a gathering in Kakamega last Saturday, the vocal politician expressed frustration, asserting that the charges against him are unrelated to ethical concerns, rendering the summons unwarranted.
The MP was called to attend a meeting with EACC officials in Nairobi in connection to an incident where he allegedly assaulted Peter Walunya Indimuli, the MCA of Malaha-Isongo-Makunga Ward, during a public event.
“Have you ever heard of an assault case handled by EACC? I even have a case in court yet you are taking me to EACC. That is politically motivated and I know who is doing that,” he lamented.
Emmanuel Wangwe, the Navakholo Member of Parliament, took a contrasting stance to Salasya, contending that the summons issued to the young MP is justified due to his alleged unethical behavior, emphasizing that addressing such conduct falls within the purview of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
“EACC is not summoning on corruption, it is on ethics and we must call ethics to order. I have no problem,” he insisted.
In a letter dated January 16, the Commission called upon the lawmaker to appear before them in relation to the assault of Indimuli that occurred at a funeral on Friday, January 12.
“The Commission notes that these allegations constitute serious ethical issues and if true, would amount to a serious breach of the integrity and ethical requirements governing the conduct of State officers,” read the letter in part.
“The Commission has launched investigations into the matter with a view to taking appropriate action in line with our mandate under the law.”
During his address, Salasya also pledged to take measures against parents who forcefully entered a school and expelled a teacher due to dissatisfaction with the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
“I as an MP declare that all people involved in chasing away the teachers will be arrested and taken into police custody,” he stated.
