High-Profile Politicians in the Hot Seat as DCI Probes Protest Funding Claims
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has ramped up its probe into allegations surrounding the funding of recent protests, focusing on prominent members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Notably, James Gakuya, the MP for Embakasi North, and Benjamin Gathiru, the MP for Embakasi Central, are under scrutiny.
The DCI has secured court orders to access phone records linked to the two MPs, based on intelligence suggesting their involvement in financing individuals who infiltrated Gen Z protests.
This comes amidst a broader investigation into political figures allegedly associated with anti-government demonstrations.
Last week, Gakuya and Gathiru obtained court orders that temporarily prevented their arrest following intensive questioning by DCI detectives.
This probe extends beyond the UDA, with other political figures also under investigation. Former Embakasi West MP George Theuri, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Munene wa Mumbi, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s private secretary, were questioned last Monday.
These individuals are suspected of having connections to the organization and funding of the protests.
Shadrack Wambui, legal counsel for the accused leaders, suggested that the questioning might be linked to their perceived connection with Deputy President Gachagua.
“They were said to be sponsoring these anti-government protests and to have some connection with the deputy president of Kenya, and for that reason, the government was questioning them,” Wambui stated.
Lawyer Danstan Omari echoed similar sentiments, proposing that the investigation could be politically motivated.
“They are now targeting their guns against the internal strife within UDA, where there is one faction led by His Excellency the President, on top of it, Raila Odinga and his team, and the other faction is Gachagua, who is now an outsider,” Omari noted.
The ongoing investigations reveal the deepening rifts within the ruling party and raise questions about the political motivations behind these allegations.
As the DCI continues its inquiry, the involvement of high-profile figures underscores the complexities and factional tensions within Kenya’s political arena.
