Human Rights Group Demands Protection for Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah after Home Raid

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has urged Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to prioritize the safety of Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and activists across Kenya.

In a press statement released on Monday, April 8, KHRC expressed concern about the escalating attacks targeting the outspoken senator and his family.

The rights group asserted that these violent incidents were a direct consequence of Omtatah’s unwavering commitment to combating injustices within the country.

KHRC implicated influential politicians associated with Kenya Kwanza in the threats faced by the lawmaker.

According to KHRC, these assaults are evidently tied to Omtatah’s activism, which encompasses the defense of human rights, contestation of unlawful government directives, and promotion of accountability.

The commission emphasized that certain individuals within the Kenya Kwanza administration are displeased with Omtatah’s influential actions.

A recent incident occurred on Wednesday, April 3, at the senator’s rural residence, resulting in injuries to his wife.

This incident adds to a series of attacks that have targeted Omtatah since December 16, 2023, including an incident on March 22 when the activist was assaulted outside Busia court.

KHRC emphasized that an assault on Omtatah represents an assault on democracy, freedom, and civil rights.

Such attacks pose a threat to the environment in which the nation’s political, legislative, social, and economic landscapes are shaped.

The commission asserted that those orchestrating these attacks aim to silence activists and discourage opposition to the government.

In a separate incident in December 2023, Meru blogger Daniel Kathiani, known as ‘Sniper’ and a vocal critic of Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza, was fatally attacked by unidentified assailants.

These events underscore the precarious situation faced by activists and critics of government figures across Kenya.
