‘I am prepared’: Eugene Wamalwa announces 2027 presidential bid
The Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) leader, Eugene Wamalwa, has signaled his intention to vie for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Wamalwa asserts that his party has given him their endorsement for the nation’s highest office, expressing his readiness to enter the electoral competition.
“I am prepared and as we speak I have taken over the leadership of DAP-K and I already have the endorsement from the party to be their presidential candidate in the 2027 polls,” he told Sunday Nation.
“We are in the process now of carrying out membership recruitment to strengthen our party at the grassroots.”
The ex-Defense Cabinet Secretary, affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja coalition, dispelled concerns about potential conflicts with the coalition’s leader, Raila Odinga, who is also anticipated to run for the presidency.
He emphasized that the coalition encourages everyone to pursue top leadership positions or adopt any political standpoint, affirming an inclusive approach within the political alliance.
“We are very democratic and we believe that a strong ODM as Raila re-energises his party, a strong Wiper as Kalonzo Musyoka re-energises his party and a strong DAP and other constituent parties will make a stronger Azimio. I believe we will capture the presidency that eluded us,” he said.
Wamalwa now joins Kalonzo in declaring his intent to run for the presidency in 2027.
Although Mr. Odinga has not revealed his own candidacy status, he has voiced assurance in Kalonzo’s ability to prevail over Ruto should they face off in the electoral contest, choosing to remain silent on his own potential participation in the presidential race.
“Mr. Odinga however believes that Mr. Musyoka has what it takes to beat Hon. William Ruto in a free and fair presidential contest, contrary to Mr. Ruto’s recent claim that he would easily beat the Wiper leader,” read a past statement from Odinga’s spokesperson Dennis Onyango.
