‘I’m ready to meet DP Gachagua’ – Maina Njenga
Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga urged the release of more than 200 youths detained in Nyeri town following the cancellation of his thanksgiving event.
Speaking to the media at his Rongai residence in Kajiado county on Monday, Njenga stated that he harbored no disagreements with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The gathering was originally scheduled to take place at Kabiru-Ini grounds in Nyeri on December 31, but it was disrupted by a significant deployment of security agencies.
“The meeting had been silently called off and the youths who were arrested had only come to see who was coming to town,” he said.
On Sunday, the police sealed off all routes leading to Kibiru-Ini grounds and set up roadblocks where they conducted inspections on all vehicles passing through.
Individuals suspected of intending to attend the venue were apprehended, and their vehicles were towed to Nyeri Central Police Station. They are anticipated to face court proceedings on Tuesday.
Njenga expressed that, similar to political leaders from different regions convening to discuss various matters, he had no objection to meeting the Deputy President to address concerns related to the Mt Kenya region.
He revealed that on Sunday, he engaged with elders from the Mt Kenya region who convinced him to cancel the meeting, emphasizing the necessity for the involvement of all stakeholders.
Njenga disclosed that, following the consensus with the elders, there are plans for another meeting that will involve various stakeholders to address important issues.
He emphasized that labeling the arrested or unemployed youths as Mungiki was inaccurate.
Njenga expressed regret that some leaders wrongly characterized these youths as Mungiki to gain electoral advantages.
