It wasn’t me! Uhuru denies congratulating Tshisekedi
Ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta has refuted claims suggesting that he extended congratulations to President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on his re-election for a second term.
In a statement released on December 31, Uhuru explicitly distanced himself from the alleged congratulatory messages, dismissing them as false.
“The office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya and Facilitator of the EAC-Led Nairobi Peace Process, would like to disassociate itself from this news update doing rounds within various mainstream and social media platforms,” Uhuru’s office tweeted.
The ex-Head of State had previously encouraged President Tshisekedi to embrace a peaceful approach and foster unity within his nation.
“President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a congratulatory message to H.E President H.E Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on his re-election as the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In his message, President Kenyatta urged the president-elect to embrace peace and unify the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Peace and unity are the foundations of a prosperous country,” the statement read in part.
The complete results of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) election are anticipated to be revealed soon, indicating that President Tshisekedi is currently in the lead with 72 percent support, surpassing opposition candidates.
Moise Katumbi, the former governor of Katanga province, holds the second position with 18.9 percent, while Martin Fayulu secures the third spot with 5.5 percent of the total votes.
Former prime minister Adolphe Muzito garnered 1.36 percent. The election, conducted on December 20, faced significant logistical challenges, leading to its extension to a second day in various parts of the expansive country.
