Karua Dismisses Kalonzo Musyoka’s Authority to Fill Odinga’s Shoes

Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has dismissed Wiper Party boss Kalonzo Musyoka’s assertions regarding his suitability to assume leadership of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition in the event that Raila Odinga, the coalition’s leader, becomes Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Odinga is currently competing to succeed Chad’s Moussa Faki as head of the African Union executive branch once Faki’s term concludes next year. He has already secured endorsements from eight presidents.

Consequently, Musyoka has been publicly expressing his readiness and suitability to take over the leadership of Azimio, the umbrella coalition to which both his and Karua’s parties belong.

However, in an interview with the Daily Nation published on Thursday, Karua rebuffed the notion of succession within Azimio should its leader assume the AUC role, citing her position as the coalition’s deputy.

She stated, “If I’m the deputy, is that a question? Even in small organizations like a school, when the headmaster goes to a meeting in Nairobi, who acts? It is the deputy. If we are unable to follow simple basic rules, then something is very wrong with us.”

Kalonzo, aged 70, has vacillated on his presidential aspirations for years, often suspending his bids to support 79-year-old Odinga, a perennial presidential contender.

However, in recent months, the former vice president has indicated his intention to challenge President William Ruto in 2027 and asserted his capability to lead Azimio.

Karua, aged 66, who served as Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 elections, insists that Azimio remains robust and is concentrating on strengthening Narc-Kenya.

She remarked, “Before His Excellency Raila put in his bid for AUC, we all agreed, go build your party, the strength of the party is the strength of Azimio. He’s done very well building ODM and I’m following in his footsteps building Narc Kenya. That is my main task now.”

Regarding Musyoka’s criticism of her faction of Mount Kenya region leaders within Azimio, known as the Kamwene Caucus, Karua affirmed her commitment, stating, “If he could first agree that having a party that is basically just in one place… if he could apply that.” She urged Musyoka to pursue his agenda while she and her supporters pursue theirs.
