Kenyans Slam Nakuru MP Samuel Arama for Embarrassing Self-Praise Display Involving Schoolboy
Nakuru Town West Member of Parliament Samwel Arama has come under criticism from certain X users for tweeting photographs from his project inspection visit in his area.
While posting on Facebook, Arama said that he joined government officials to examine several initiatives in the Kapkuret and Barut wards, as well as the relevant MCAs.
While the majority of the images show the MP moving about flanked by staff and other authorities, one shot in particular drew the attention of Kenyans: a little kid putting up a homemade banner in favor of the politician.
The pupil, who seems awkward and out of place, is shown holding up a manila paper with the inscription: “Thank You so much, Mheshimiwa Arama, for the bursary you gave us. “May God bless you.”
The MP can be seen comfortably resting his hand on the boy’s shoulders, as if happy of the plaudits he has received.
Many people, particularly on X, were understandably upset by the gesture, condemning the Member of Parliament for putting the underage lad to such a humiliating public display.
Many others criticized the lawmaker for attempting to claim personal credit for a program that is entirely supported by taxpayers, advising him to get off his high horse and tone down the conceit.
Others observed the boy’s obvious discomfort, as well as the fact that he looked to have been positioned in an awkward position for show.
“Subjecting a minor to such degree of survitude and indignity is a criminality!” one X user said.
Another one noted, “Firimbi and trumpet lazima. It was the greatest injustice of the highest order to give MPs the power to control the bursary! You can clearly tell the boy feels ashamed standing next to such a bunch of ignorant adults! Disaster!”
On his part, Education activist Frank Ojwang said, “@NAssemblyKE could you pass a law to protect the privacy of the vulnerable children being supported? We welcome the help but let us protect the identity of the vulnerable young people receiving help. No photo should make it possible to identify the beneficiaries even if they want!”
A displeased Rene Njoki also expressed her disgust, saying, “Being poor is the worst thing ever! Mama mboga, mtu wa bodaboda and now needy kids being used for PR! Thanking a politician for paying for them fees with their own(taxpayers money)!”
On Facebook, the MP celebrated his accomplishments, stating that he had directed his staff to “pick up challenges highlighted by teachers and locals and act accordingly.”
