Kenya’s Village Elders to Get KSh 7,000 Monthly Under Nyumba Kumi
Raymond Omollo, the principal secretary of the Ministry of Interior, has expressed support for revisions to the National Government Coordination Act of 2022 that would permit the compensation of village elders.
Village elders were acknowledged for their vital assistance to Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs within the Nyumba Kumi initiative.
During a public participation session concerning amendments to the National Government Coordination Act of 2022, jointly conducted by the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and the Administration and Internal Security Committee, the PS voiced backing for the initiative.
The Nyumba Kumi initiative, geared towards improving community well-being and addressing security matters at the grassroots level, has consistently depended on the indispensable contributions of Village Elders.
These revered individuals play a crucial role in promoting unity, settling disputes, and offering essential counsel within their communities.
As part of the proposed amendments, a monthly allowance of KSh.7,000 was put forward for Village Elders.
This allowance recognizes their commitment and empowers them to carry out their essential duties effectively.
The Nyumba Kumi initiative was introduced as a response to criminal activity and terrorism in Kenya’s residential neighborhoods.
Under the Nyumba Kumi initiative, residents are encouraged to regularly engage with one another and exchange information. They are tasked with monitoring security risks and sharing relevant information with local authorities and security agencies.
Kithure Kindiki emphasized the significance of the Nyumba Kumi initiative within the country’s security framework during his vetting.
He highlighted that the proposal to compensate officials with KSh 500 for every two meetings held in a week was crucial to acknowledge their contributions at the grassroots level of the security system.
“Nyumba Kumi is a very critical organ within our security architecture, the kind of requests that have been presented by this cadre are modest, including KSh 500 per two meetings a week. That’s a thousand shillings a week,” Kithure said.
