Kindiki Issues New Directive to Police Over Ongoing Doctors’ Strike
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, on Tuesday, April 9, directed law enforcement agencies to ensure protection for the public against service disruption caused by the doctors’ strike.
He also instructed security agencies to safeguard non-striking health workers from threats and intimidation by the striking doctors.
Kindiki emphasized that some striking health workers had resorted to intimidating and threatening violence against those who chose not to participate in the demonstrations.
In issuing these directives, Kindiki highlighted that the demonstrating doctors had repeatedly threatened to disrupt service delivery in health institutions, thereby interfering with daily activities.
He emphasized that any actions, including gatherings or protests, undertaken outside the law and in violation of court directives, undermine the country and are not permissible.
The Interior CS further noted that the doctors’ actions contradicted the directive issued by the Labour Relations court.
He referred to the court’s order for the parties involved in the ongoing industrial dispute in the health sector to engage in conciliation and negotiation proceedings within 14 days and subsequently submit a memorandum of understanding to the court.
These directives from CS Kindiki follow the doctors’ rejection of the government’s Ksh2.4 billion offer, with the doctors vowing to continue their demonstrations.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto, on April 7, clarified that the government was unable to meet the financial demands of the striking doctors.
He stated that the government was prepared to pay intern doctors Ksh70,000 for one year and urged an end to the strike.
Ruto emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility, stating, “I know we have a situation in Kenya with our doctors and interns.
“I want to implore them that it is important for us as a nation that we must live within our means. We cannot continue to spend the money we do not have.
“I am telling the doctors that we mind them and we value the service that they give to our nation but we must live within our means.”
