Kisumu Resident Expresses Wish for Raila Odinga to Lose AUC Bid
A Kisumu resident, Fred Ogina, expressed his lack of enthusiasm regarding ODM leader Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission chairmanship position.
Ogina, speaking to Citizen TV on Wednesday, April 10, articulated his hope that Raila would fail to secure the continental seat.
He questioned the rationale behind Raila’s interest in the position, given that Kenyans elected him to advocate for their rights.
Ogina emphasized the need for Raila, the leader of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, to experience a significant defeat, asserting that his potential performance at the AUC would yield negligible benefits for Kenyans.
“I want him to be defeated because we voted for him to defend Kenyans’ issues. I don’t know what he is going to do at the African Union,” Ogina remarked.
However, contrasting perspectives emerged among residents, with some expressing confidence in the former prime minister’s ability to secure the continental seat.
The upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship vote saw Djibouti nominating a candidate. Scheduled for February 2025, the vote has attracted three East African candidates thus far.
Djibouti’s nominee, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, will compete against Kenya’s Raila Odinga and Fawzia Adam from Somalia.
The announcement of Youssouf’s candidature came through an official communique from the country’s presidential office, published on Tuesday, April 9.
