Man Behind Bars for Pelting Stones at Ruto’s Convoy
A Kisumu County worker has been sentenced to either a year in prison or a Ksh10,000 fine for his conviction in disrupting President William Ruto‘s 2021 rally.
The individual in question, Wilson Aminda, was alleged to have thrown stones, along with other associates, at a campaign event hosted by the Head of State in the Lakeside city several months prior to the 2022 elections.
The court determined that his actions disturbed the tranquility of the gathering.
When he was apprehended in November 2021, the accused was charged with leading a group that allegedly pelted stones at the convoy on which Ruto was traveling to the rally.
As per the court proceedings, the defendant was charged with vandalizing five government-owned vehicles at the Kondele roundabout. It’s important to note that during this time, William Ruto held the position of Deputy President.
“Aminda created a disturbance by pelting stones at a crowd in a political rally and at the DP’s motorcade there by maliciously destroying a special land cruiser REG GKB 263G, GKB 741J, and a Toyota Hilux,” read the court papers in part.
Consequently, he faced two charges: one for damaging government property and another for disturbing the peace. In November 2021, Aminda entered a not guilty plea and was granted provisional release upon payment of a Ksh100,000 cash bail or a Ksh500,000 bond as an alternative.
Following the incident, he was apprehended when he appeared in a video and photographs that circulated widely on social media. The then Police Spokesperson, Bruno Shioso, informed the media that Aminda was incarcerated after a thorough investigation.
“Based on intelligence gathered, there was tension within Kondele owing to alleged distribution of campaign logistical funds amongst local groups,” stated at the time.
