Meru Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali Hospitalized as Daughter Dies in Road Crash
Meru County Assembly Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali was critically injured on Tuesday, and his little daughter, Mellisa Makena, perished in a traffic accident on the Meru-Embu route.
The Deputy Speaker’s Subaru Legacy burst into flames after colliding head-on with a Toyota double cabin in Kivwe village, Embu county.
According to witnesses, Mr Ali was on his way to Nairobi from Meru with two family members when the catastrophe hit.
His driver, Michael Mwongera, 35, and a two-year-old daughter were also hurt in the collision, which generated a massive traffic jam on the normally bustling Highway.
Survivors were sent to the adjacent Ena Hospital for treatment. They were subsequently evacuated to Nairobi for specialized care as their health deteriorated.
Witnesses described how they heard a huge noise and raced to the spot.
“On arrival at the scene, we saw a huge fire engulfing the Deputy Speaker’s car. It was really shocking,” one of the witnesses said.
Residents blocked the road while attempting to rescue the Deputy Speaker, his driver, and two small children.
“This is the worst accident that has happened in this area recently,” another witness said.
As per the police incident report, Mr. Ali, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered chest pains, a deep laceration on the forehead, and a dislocated left knee.
Mr. Nicholas Maina, commander of Embu County, verified that Mr. Ali was in his vehicle at the time of the collision with two family members and a driver.
“It was a fatal accident but the Deputy Speaker survived and he was flown to Nairobi together with other survivors who were aboard his car,” he said.
He stated that investigations had been started to determine the precise conditions surrounding the catastrophe.
“We have commenced investigations with a view of establishing what caused the accident,” he said.
Nevertheless, Mr. Maina cautioned motorists traversing the route to exercise caution in order to prevent such tragic incidents.
“Drivers should observe traffic rules so that we don’t continue losing lives,” he said.
The heavily damaged vehicle of the Deputy Speaker was transported to the Embu West police station for inspection.
