Mt Kenya kingpin? DP Rigathi Gachagua, Ndindi Nyoro in supremacy battle as Rigathi Gachagua’s popularity dwindle
A political power struggle is unfolding in the Mt Kenya region as certain leaders advocate for the endorsement of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as the spokesperson for the area.
This move is raising concerns that it could lead to a confrontation between Nyoro and Deputy President Rigathi and his supporters, who firmly believe that no leader can overshadow the Deputy President’s role in the region.
Despite these tensions, discussions about Mt Kenya leadership took center stage this week during the launch of Ndindi’s Masomo Bora program, with some politicians expressing their support for the Kiharu MP.
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Mathioya MP Edwin Mugo, and former Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion set the tone for the succession discussions.
They pointed out that Ndindi Nyoro is seen as a rising star due to his capacity to collaborate with leaders across various political affiliations.
Gatungu North MP Njoroge Kururia said Ndindi was youthful and a helpful person. “As parliamentary chair of the budget and appropriation committee, he has delivered presidential material,” he said.
Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematiah highlighted that Ndindi Nyoro’s leadership qualities have enabled him to engage effectively with other leaders.
“I’m here to support him and the next time I am called, I will be ready to be closer to him,” said Jematiah.
Nyutu depicted Ndindi as an outgoing leader who has united Mt Kenya with other parts of the country. “He is one of the leaders who has a lot of respect for others and mentors upcoming ones, thus fit for Mt Kenya spokesman,” said Nyutu.
Nevertheless, the remarks have triggered responses from Deputy President’s allies who feel that the effort to raise Ndindi’s status is inappropriate.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga suggested that young politicians in the area should exercise patience and focus on developing their political careers with an eye toward national leadership.
Kahiga underscored the importance for emerging leaders to refrain from hastiness or endeavors to supplant existing leaders.
“Young leaders in the region should not be over-ambitious but wait for the right time when they will have an opportunity to serve the community at the national level. For now, let them respect those above them,” he said.
He urged Gachagua to mentor young politicians towards national leadership. “I have been saying our former president Uhuru Kenyatta never natured any young leader during his regime, we request the president and his deputy to mold the young leaders,” he said.
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi rejected the reported endorsement of Nyoro as the spokesperson for the region, stating that it is premature to engage in discussions about this role.
He urged fellow leaders to concentrate on fulfilling their responsibilities to the Kenyan people rather than prematurely delving into discussions about the region’s spokesperson.
“We are slightly over one year into office, and our focus remains to deliver on the promises we made during campaigns, so those interested in politics should hold their horses. By the virtue that the DP holds the senior most position in this government, that automatically makes him our spokesperson,” he said.
However, he promptly added that everyone has the right to be ambitious, emphasizing the importance of pursuing ambitions with decorum and a realistic approach.
“We cannot stop anybody from being ambitious, but what we are saying is that there is a government in place, there is a president, his deputy, and the structure is clear. The DP is focused on ensuring that cash crops from this region give farmers good returns. He is not interested in spokesperson or regional kingpin,” he added.
The legislator, who represents Deputy President Gachagua’s constituency, also accused those fueling the discussion of intentionally diverting the attention of other leaders away from their duties to the Kenyan people.
It was noted that Ndindi Nyoro has not attended any public event presided over by Gachagua since last year.
