Murkomen Announces Construction of New Airport in Bungoma
On Wednesday, April 3, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared that the national government will turn Matulo Aistrtip near Bungoma into an airport.
During a tour of the county, CS Kipchumba highlighted that the initiative aimed to improve the mobility of people and products across the area.
Murkomen commented on how the project will benefit the community, stating that nearby inhabitants would gain employment and business prospects during construction.
“The runway will be extended to 1.2km of tarmac and a terminal building put up,” Murkomen further added.
At the same time, Tourism CS Alfred Mutua urged CS Murkomen to carry out similar works in Voi, Taita Taveta County.
“I will liaise with my counterpart in the Ministry of Transport to expedite works on the Ikanga Airfield in Voi,” Mutua promised Taita Taveta residents.
Murkomen vowed to carry out various projects in the Western area, including the construction of a new airport.
Under President William Ruto’s administration, CS Murkomen said that the government will build around 600 km of roads in the area.
“Roads and other transport infrastructure are critical in supporting commerce, tourism and agriculture, as well as production and extractive industries,” he explained the need for the expensive infrastructural investment.
The expansion of the road network will include improving existing roads to bitumen standards, as well as constructing drains and sidewalks.
“My Ministry, through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), is building 336km of roads,’ he stated.
The roads will be built by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA).
