‘Nairobi sea-ty haiwork’ – Babu Owino mocks Sakaja as roads flood in Nairobi’s CBD
Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino criticized Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for the flooded roads in the Central Business District (CBD) after a heavy rainfall on January 5, 2024.
Owino playfully turned Sakaja’s “lazima i-work” slogan against him, mocking the governor’s efforts to address the issue.
On his official X account, the lawmaker sarcastically remarked about the County Government’s assurances to residents regarding measures to combat the adverse effects of rain, highlighting the irony that the capital city now resembles a ‘sea’ due to unexpected floods.
“At least Ksh2 Billion was withdrawn from Nairobi County by Mr Dimples to mitigate floods in Nairobi akakula pesa. Hii ni Nairobi siku ya leo. Kazi ya dimples ni ulevi, PR, uwizi na sherehe. Nairobi sea-ty haiwork,” Babu Owino’s statement reads.

In September 2023, Governor Sakaja initiated the Preparedness and Response Marshall Plan, allocating a minimum of Ksh300 million to address the anticipated impact of the upcoming elevated short rains.
He claimed that the launch of the plan resulted in savings of at least Ksh2 billion for both the county and national governments.
As part of the plan, the county government implemented a strategy deploying over 2,500 personnel known as the Green Army.
This team was tasked with delivering environmental management services throughout the County, encompassing activities such as storm drain clearance, garbage collection, and various community services.
“In some areas, we unclogged water pathways and storm drainage systems that were full of garbage possibly accumulated over more than two decades,” Sakaja noted.
Adding;
“Looking back, we estimate that our El Niño Rapid Response Marshall Plan has potentially saved the County Government and the National Government more than Ksh2 billion. These funds would have been spent for emergency works and relief interventions had the El Niño Rapid Response Marshall Plan not been activated. By activating the Green Army, all the 80 potential hotspots had been appropriately treated to prevent flooding, displacement, and economic disruption.”
The flooding in the Central Business District (CBD) coincides with the Kenya Meteorological Department’s prediction of additional rainfall in the upcoming weeks.
