New Round of Uhuru’s Jubilee Purge: Kanini Kega and Sabina Chege Facing Seat Loss
Just a day after Azimio succeeded in ejecting nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege as the deputy minority whip in the National Assembly.
Call for Further Action
The embattled party leadership now wants to revoke her nomination together with EALA counterpart Kanini Kega. Jubilee’s National Executive Committee (NEC) met on Thursday and instructed the party’s leadership in parliament to engage their Azimio allies to kick out members loyal to President William Ruto from committee leadership.
Commitment to the Party
During the NEC meeting, Jubilee emphasized the importance of having members committed to the party.
Vice Chairman’s Statement
Jubilee’s vice chairman, David Murathe, stated, “Once we are properly in office by the court, the first order of business will be to denominate Sabina Chege and Kanini Kega. Kega’s position at EALA was from Jubilee.”
Concerns Raised
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni noted during the NEC meeting that the Kenya Kwanza government had given jobs to some of its members to undermine the party from within.
Factional Dispute
The Kega-Chege faction has been attempting to wrestle control of the party from Uhuru’s allies following the fallout after an election defeat, but the court has suspended the takeover. Kioni maintains that they are still in Azimio, while the Kega faction wants to distance themselves from the opposition coalition.
Allegiance Shift
Leading figures in the Kega faction have pledged allegiance to Kenya Kwanza, aiding the ruling coalition in advancing its legislative agenda.
Legal Consequences
The latest move is likely to trigger a new round of legal battles, further deepening the party’s internal rivalry.
Court Intervention
Sabina Chege had sought legal action to prevent the Azimio side from removing her as the deputy minority whip.
Azimio’s Reaction
After Azimio threatened to withdraw from bipartisan talks, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the changes.
