Oparanya Breaks Silence on Endorsing Khalwale for 2027 Governor Seat
ODM’s deputy leader, Wycliffe Oparanya, has finally addressed recent claims surrounding his support for Senator Boni Khalwale’s bid for the 2027 Kakamega gubernatorial seat. This clarification comes in the wake of a joint press conference in January, which marked a significant shift in their longstanding rivalry.
Oparanya revealed that during a public meeting, Khalwale acknowledged his seniority in Kakamega and expressed his intention to contest in 2027. However, there was no formal request for support due to their differing party affiliations.
The clarification was made during the burial ceremony of Mwalimu Haggai Isiongo, where Oparanya stressed the importance of unity and development in Kakamega, alongside Governor Fernandes Barasa and other prominent leaders.
Previous attempts at reconciliation, notably at Oparanya’s residence, saw both leaders commit to working together for the betterment of the county, despite their political differences.
Reflecting on their history, Oparanya acknowledged Khalwale’s role in holding him accountable during his tenure as governor, which ultimately contributed to effective service delivery.
An unexpected gesture from Khalwale, who gifted a cow to Oparanya’s home, highlighted the evolving nature of their relationship.
Khalwale’s unsuccessful bid for the governorship in 2017 against Oparanya led to his subsequent candidacy for the Senate within the UDA party in 2022.
Governor Barasa also weighed in, dismissing rumors of discord with Oparanya and affirming his support for him as a potential successor to lead ODM.
Barasa urged elected officials in Butere constituency, particularly County Assembly members, to prioritize unity and cooperation for the betterment of the region.
