Orengo bans UDA party officials from speaking in any function he attends
Orengo has recently stated that no officials from the UDA party will be allowed to address events in which he is present.
This disapproval stems from the removal of Ugenya MP David Ochieng and former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo from a burial ceremony in Siaya county, attended by Orengo and Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM party.
Kennedy Obuya, the temporary chairman of the Homa Bay UDA party, representing other chairmen in the Nyanza region, expressed that Orengo’s remarks verge on incitement and should be criticized.
“The intention of Orengo is to make utterances that border on hate speech and ethnic incitement in the hope that the government will harrass and arrest them,” he said.
He alleges that the Governor aims to exploit the arrest to incite anti-UDA sentiments in the Luo Nyanza region. Obuya contends that UDA is gaining significant support in the area, causing panic within ODM, which is resorting to questionable tactics to hinder UDA’s penetration.
Obuya highlights that UDA has been conducting extensive grassroots awareness campaigns and member recruitment peacefully, without any form of solicitation or coercion.
Nevertheless, Obuya urges the government to disregard Orengo but advises him that his reckless and proactive statements approach the threshold of incitement.
“Luo Nyanza must be made aware that ODM is attempting to isolate them from political competition using threats of violence and intimidation,” he said.
He additionally claimed that Orengo had directed Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi to spearhead the enforcement efforts aimed at UDA party officials.
“The two will be held personally liable to injuries, deaths and destruction to any personal property that will arise from their careless utterances,” he said.
Obuya asserts that as UDA party officials in the region, they remain committed to promoting the party and bringing in new members.
He emphasizes that they will not, under any circumstances, forsake the region for the ODM party, which, according to him, has struggled for years without success in bringing about economic liberation in the area.
“With billions of shillings getting allocated to Luo Nyanza counties, the UDA party urges ODM leaders to focus on service delivery to the people instead if targeting UDA party officials,” he said.
He proceeded to caution the people of Luo Nyanza against being manipulated to engage in expensive political battles that only serve the interests of ODM political leaders.
