Police Intervene as Speaker and His Deputy Fight Inside Assembly
Members of the Laikipia County Assembly (MCAs) engaged in physical fights on Tuesday as two opposing camps clashed over plans to oust Minority Leader Sammy Lekopien Parletto.
The commotion began when a group of MCAs protested after Speaker Lantano Nabaala began reading a motion of notice of impeachment seeking to remove Lekopien Parletto from office.
During the proceedings, the MCAs were seen shoving and throwing objects at one another. At one point, Speaker Nabaala and his deputy Anthony Theuri got into a physical altercation.
The MCAs who supported the Minority Leader claimed that the notice was read without prior communication, catching the majority of them off guard.
After the Speaker read the notice, the deputy speaker engaged his boss in a duel, as the MCAs began thumping their desks and other county legislators stormed out of the house.
“You want to silence the house. It will not be possible because this house is governed by the rule of law,” Parleto told the press after storming out of the house.
Others openly expressed their dismay, criticising how the planned ouster was carried out.
“The way events have transpired here today has been a shock to us, that we have a County Assembly that does not follow law and order,” one of the MCAs, Gitahi Macharia told journalists.
Meanwhile, police officers were forced to intervene after the politicians overpowered the guards stationed at the assembly.
Following the bickering, the county assembly was closed, and events were rescheduled until further notice.
In Kisii, 51 out of 69 MCAs have signed an impeachment motion aimed at removing Deputy Governor Robert Monda.
The MCAs filed the motion on February 20, accusing the Deputy Governor of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
