President Ruto’s Issues New Directive To Newly Appointed Diplomats
President William Ruto has instructed recently appointed diplomats to oversee the prudent use of public funds in Kenya’s overseas missions.
Addressing a gathering of 41 newly designated ambassadors, high commissioners, and deputy heads of mission at State House Nairobi on Thursday, Ruto emphasized the importance of accountability in managing the allocated funds for embassies.
“As the ambassador, you are the agent of the government of Kenya to make sure public resources allocated to your embassies are used prudently,” said Ruto.
The President also urged the ambassadors to be prepared to “assume a more prominent role in representing the country abroad” as the government reduces foreign travel.
“It will not be necessary for us to send ministers and other public officials unless it is necessary,” The Head of State said.
Ruto urged the diplomats to take proactive measures to safeguard and promote the interests of Kenyans in their respective designated countries.
The Head of State emphasized that ambassadors should actively seek out new business prospects for Kenyans abroad and position Kenya as an attractive investment destination.
He emphasized the need for them to emulate the dedication of foreign ambassadors in Kenya, who go the extra mile to advocate for the interests of their nations and citizens.
“It is my expectation that you will cultivate relations that foster the interests of the Republic of Kenya,” he added.
He advised them not to hesitate in making difficult decisions “as long as they are made in good faith,” emphasizing that the prevailing “culture of blame game” must come to an end.
Quoting American author on leadership John Maxwell, President Ruto said: “The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.”
He provided the envoys with assurance of both his support and that of the government as they commenced their diplomatic missions. The President also urged them to serve all Kenyans impartially, regardless of political, community, or religious affiliations.
“I have not appointed any one of you to represent your family, your village, your community or your region. You are going to represent Kenya,” he said.
President Ruto observed that Kenya’s international standing has significantly strengthened in the past year, attributing it to the nation’s vigorous promotion of global issues.
He instructed the ambassadors to meet the expectations of the global community and effectively represent the country on the international stage.
