Raila Odinga Assures of Azimio’s Continuity Amid AU Chair Aspirations

Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio One Kenya Alliance, has reassured supporters amidst speculations about the stability of the opposition following his aspirations for the African Union Commission chairperson position.

Dismissing concerns, Raila affirmed that both Azimio and ODM will persevere, upholding the opposition’s vision as initially conceived.

During a speech at Akala market in Siaya, Raila criticized the establishment of the provincial administration system, asserting its lack of constitutional recognition.

“Our vision remains unwavering. Do not be misled; I am not stepping back. ODM and Azimio will endure,” he declared.

To bolster ODM’s strength, Raila announced plans for a membership drive in the North Eastern region, emphasizing the necessity of unity within the party.

In a notable shift from past rhetoric, Raila expressed readiness to collaborate with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza, particularly in implementing recommendations from the National Dialogue Committee, including the reconstitution of the IEBC.

However, amidst Raila’s ambitions, six MPs aligned with Kenya Kwanza warned that his appointment to the AU Commission would signal the demise of the opposition, potentially facilitating Ruto’s seamless reelection in 2027.

Meanwhile, Raila urged the national government to decentralize functions such as KURA and KeRRA to expedite infrastructural development at the county level, stressing the importance of prompt fund disbursement to support devolution.

Governor James Orengo echoed concerns about delays in fund disbursement, hindering counties’ project implementation and impeding devolution’s efficacy.

In summary, Raila Odinga remains resolute in his commitment to Azimio and ODM’s continuity, despite external speculations surrounding his AU aspirations, while advocating for enhanced devolution and streamlined fund disbursement processes.
