Raila blames Kenya Kwanza for woes facing Luo Council of Elders
ODM chief Raila Odinga has taken steps to address the internal discord within the Luo Council of Elders.
He accused the government of being responsible for the ongoing conflicts within the council and suggested that Kenya Kwanza is intentionally causing chaos in the Nyanza bloc for political motives.
Raila made these remarks in Kisumu while attending the installation ceremony of Mzee Odungi Randa as the chairman of the Luo community’s Ker (Ker) position.
Raila Odinga pledged to work towards maintaining unity in the region. Mzee Odungi Randa, a former associate of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and a close confidant of Raila, has been appointed as the Ker chairman.
Nevertheless, Randa’s appointment coincides with a period of internal strife within the council, as his faction is currently engaged in a power struggle with another group led by elder Nyandiko Ongadi for supremacy.
The competition has resulted in a division within the community, with the faction led by Nyandiko Ongadi receiving support from senior government officials in the region.
On the other hand, Mzee Odungi Randa’s faction enjoys the backing of Raila Odinga. Concerns have been raised that the Ongadi-led faction is close to seizing control of the council’s assets, including the historically significant Ofafa Hall.
The faction led by Nyandiko Ongadi is aligned with Kenya Kwanza and is one of the groups that President William Ruto is counting on to weaken Raila Odinga’s support in Nyanza.
Nevertheless, Raila Odinga has recently intervened in the disputes that have plagued the council, addressing the controversies that have arisen in recent days.
“Ignore Nyandiko. There are just some people who are using him. When you see him pop up, just know someone is using him. Confront the person and tell him to keep off,” Raila said.
Raila Odinga characterized the newly appointed chairman, Mzee Odungi Randa, as a reliable individual who dedicatedly served his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
“There were many people who worked with Jaramogi but were betrayers. Randa is one of the people who worked with Jaramogi but never betrayed him. I am happy to see Odungi coronated today as the Ker of the Luo.”
Accompanied by the governors of Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori, Raila Odinga, the ODM leader, attended the event. Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o of Kisumu shared the challenges faced by the political leaders in the region in their efforts to bring together and reconcile the conflicting factions among the elders.
