Raila doesn’t need Ruto’s support for AU chair job – Senator
Migori Senator Eddie Oketch remarked that Kenya Kwanza administration’s support isn’t essential for Azimio leader Raila Odinga to clinch the position of African Union Commission chairperson.
Oketch emphasized that Raila’s extensive networks and esteemed reputation suffice to qualify him for the role.
Additionally, he asserted that, on a continental scale, the Opposition leader holds a superior position compared to President William Ruto.
“Raila Odinga has massive networks and massive respect across the globe. I can argue that in the continent today, if you were to compare Raila Odinga and President Ruto in terms of continental respect both diplomatic and political, Raila scores way above Ruto. His network spans way above Ruto,” Oketch said on Citizen TV.
Nevertheless, he asserted that the government’s purported efforts to advocate for the former Prime Minister’s candidacy for the AU chairmanship are merely a tactic to deter him from advocating for the interests of Kenyans.
The Migori Senator further mentioned that Raila has not formally announced his intention to vie for the position.
“Raila Odinga hasn’t pronounced himself on this matter… Raila is a consultative leader,” he said.
Senator Oketch’s comments come amid reports suggesting that President Ruto is endorsing Raila for the AU chairmanship. It’s worth noting that any candidate for this prestigious position must be officially nominated by member states.
According to these reports, the lobbying for Raila’s candidacy would commence during the 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union’s Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Kenya’s representation at this summit was led by Prime Cabinet Secretary and CS for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi.
Additionally, there have been speculations that retired President Uhuru Kenyatta was also considering vying for the AU chairmanship but might have opted to support Raila instead.
If Ruto indeed supports Raila for this continental role, it would significantly alter Kenya’s political landscape, resembling a continuation of the “handshake” agreement. Furthermore, it could potentially remove Raila from the running for the 2027 presidential election, prompting new political realignments.
It’s important to recognize that AU chairpersons are expected to remain neutral in political competitions across Africa. This position holds considerable influence, almost akin to that of a head of state, and entails involvement in major international events, including elections, conflicts, and development initiatives, not only within Africa but globally.
