Raila now wants Wetang’ula to resign as Ford Kenya party leader – Here is why
Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio la Umoja, is calling for the resignation of Moses Wetang’ula from his position as the Ford Kenya party leader.
Raila argues that as a neutral mediator in the National Assembly, Wetang’ula should not be affiliated with any political party.
“Wetang’ula should resign as Ford Kenya party boss. Before anybody becomes the speaker he/she should not be a leader of any party,” Odinga stated.
He delivered these remarks during the funeral of the late Lawrence Sifuna, former Bumula Member of Parliament, in Bungoma on Saturday.
Additionally, Raila criticized the current Members of Parliament (MPs), asserting that they are not resolute in their commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Kenyan people.
“The MPs are the ones who come up with the laws to guide the Country but nowadays they are the ones passing the Finance bill that will hurt Kenyans,” he said, noting that MPs should be professional while presiding over their work.
He added:
“Wetang’ula is my longtime friend. I’m the One who requested him to exit KANU, therefore, he should not let Kenyans down and instead work according to the law.”
Furthermore, Odinga expressed disagreement with the government’s proposal to privatize state-owned enterprises, emphasizing that during the election campaigns, the President had promised to improve the overall cost of living.
“Ruto promised to help Bungoma get a brand new mill at Nzoia Sugar Company. I am also waiting for the day it will be available so that I can come over to witness,” said former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
The ODM leader strongly criticized Wetang’ula, praising former National Assembly Speaker Kennedy Marende as the most commendable speaker.
“Out of the Speakers we have had in the parliament, Kennedy Marende was someone who stuck to the law and served this country very well,” he said.
In response, Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka highlighted the region’s pride in having produced three speakers since independence.
Lusaka, who is also the first deputy party leader of the Ford Kenya party, made these remarks. Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of DAP-K and former defense CS, commended Bumula MP Jack Wamboka and Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga for their steadfast opposition to the Finance bill.
Other notable figures present at the event included Azimio leader Raila Odinga, governors James Orengo (Siaya), George Natembeya (Trans-Nzoia), Health and Sanitation CS Susan Nakhumicha, former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, as well as MPs John Makali (Kanduyi), John Waluke (Sirisia), and various MCAs, among others.
