Raila Odinga breaks silence after meeting Ruto and Yoweri Museveni in Uganda
Raila Odinga, the Azimio leader, expressed delight after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni officially joined the list of leaders endorsing his bid for the AU chairmanship.
Raila, a former prime minister, revealed that his decision to run for the prestigious position was the result of careful consideration, demonstrating his willingness to lead Africa and significantly influence its development trajectory.
On Monday, February 26, Raila met with Museveni and President William Ruto in an undisclosed meeting at Museveni’s residence.
The discussions covered a variety of topics, with a focus on Raila’s AU bid.
Notably, Museveni strongly supported Raila’s candidature, bolstering the momentum created by Ruto’s endorsement after Raila declared his interest in the race.
“Crucially, at the urging of President Museveni, we also discussed my candidacy for Chairperson of the African Union Commission. I am very grateful to President Museveni for strongly endorsing my candidacy and to President Ruto for fully backing it,” he disclosed.
The long-time opposition leader, however, did not specify when they were invited to the joint meeting.
The duo accepted the invitation and discussed issues that would deepen the regional integration of the East African community, in addition to his AU bid.
“Several days ago, I accepted an invitation from President Kaguta Museveni of Uganda for a joint meeting with President William Ruto today to discuss the deepening of regional integration within the East African Community,” he added.
