Raila Odinga calls for ODM party leaders to stop succession disputes that may fuel ethnic divisions

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio, has urged other leaders of the ODM party to abstain from inciting succession disputes that could potentially exacerbate ethnic divisions.

On Sunday, March 31st, he delivered a speech at the Malindi Islamic Centre for Orphans as part of their fundraising campaign to assist in the education and infrastructure of disadvantaged children.

He dismissed any notion of a leadership void and emphasised his sustained leadership within the party.

By way of analogy, he compared those competing for leadership positions to those who wish to enter into matrimony with a woman while her spouse is still alive.

Raila emphasised the significance of party cohesion and expansion, establishing the party as the preeminent political organisation in East and Central Africa.

Odinga encouraged party members to offer recommendations for prospective candidates on the basis of merit rather than ethnic background, emphasising the importance of all leaders possessing strong qualities in their positions.

“ODM is our party. It is like our church. We do not want to create divisions based on ethnic backgrounds. If you start campaigning based on your ethnic regions, you will interfere with the desired unity yet we want this party to be the strongest in East and Central Africa.

We need to keep this party alive. So whether it is Joho or Oparanya or me, we will move forward as a party. Make suggestions but do not limit yourselves to your regions,” said Raila.
