Raila Odinga declares his candidacy for Top AU Seat
Raila Odinga, the leader of the One Kenya Coalition Party, has formally declared his candidacy for the highest position within the African Union (AU).
Speaking to the press on Thursday, February 15, the ex-prime minister stated that he had conducted thorough consultations before opting to vie for the chairmanship of the AU commission.
“I am ready to go for the championship of the African Union. I have been consulting widely. I think if am ready to serve the continent of Africa. Africa deserves better. If we marshal our resources as a continent, pull in one direction, the we can be able to make Africa greater,” Raila said.
The former prime minister emphasized that his prior experience as the high representative of the AU provides him with an additional advantage to fulfill the duties of the position more effectively.
“ I have served in the AU in the capacity of high representative, it gave me a good advantage to be able to learn about every African country and the comparative advantages and I believe that by walking together with the countries we can make Africa great,” he said.
The current chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is scheduled to step down from office in March of the following year.
