Raila will run for presidency in 2027 – Kioni

Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni asserts that Raila Odinga will run for the presidency in 2027, regardless of whether he becomes the head of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Kioni highlighted that securing the AUC role would be a strategic manoeuvre for Odinga, positioning him favourably for the forthcoming presidential contest.

He admitted that the recent talks involving Odinga, President William Ruto, and Ugandan President Museveni had exacerbated the divides within the Azimio alliance.

“Raila Odinga will unquestionably be on the ballot in the next general election. While his explanations regarding recent meetings were not entirely satisfactory to us in Azimio, we have accepted his narrative due to a lack of alternative options,” Kioni in an interview on Kameme FM on Monday.

Kioni reiterated Azimio’s dedication to holding the administration responsible and ensuring the realisation of campaign pledges.

He, together with Martha Karua, the leader of the Narc Kenya party, made a commitment to persistently champion the concerns and welfare of the Mount Kenya region while being part of the opposition.

Kioni cautioned against the possible marginalisation of the Mount Kenya region and emphasised the significance of unity and a unified voice in national politics to protect the region’s importance and prosperity.

“Mount Kenya region risks losing its relevance in national political discourse if they fail to unite and speak in one voice, we are supporting anyone who is preaching about unity in the Mount Kenya region irrespective of political affiliation,” he said.

Kioni emphasised that Odinga’s quest of the AUC chairmanship is essentially a tactical manoeuvre to wait until the 2027 presidential competition.

Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management, stated during an interview with Spice Radio on Monday that Raila will participate in the election to compete against President Ruto.

“Baba [Odinga] seeks to occupy himself constructively while awaiting the presidential election. His leadership belongs in national politics, not as chairman of the AUC,” Kuria stated during the interview on Spice FM.

Kuria expressed his endorsement of Odinga’s quest for the African Union (AU), emphasising the advantageous economic prospects it could bring to the area.

Leaders from the Mount Kenya region recently advised President Ruto to exercise cautious when engaging with Odinga in order to prevent any disruption to the Kenya Kwanza government.
