Ruto Beats African Presidents to Win Annual Continental Award

On Monday, President William Ruto was announced as the recipient of the African Leadership Persons of the Year award by the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) in the United Kingdom.

The selection process for the winner comprised two stages: a call for nominations and an online voting poll conducted on December 14.

“Congratulations H.E. William Ruto, President of Kenya on your emergence as African of the Year,” read a statement by ALM.


As stated by Dr. Ken Giami, the head of the African Leadership Organisation, the recipients of the 2023 ALM African Person of the Year Awards have notably advanced and made noteworthy contributions to the African renaissance during the assessed period.

Their key achievements include driving sustainable development, fostering economic growth, and promoting peace and political stability.

The ALM Persons of the Year Awards represent Africa’s foremost vote-based commendations, held annually to honor prominent Africans actively contributing to the continent’s advancement and positively transforming its often unfavorable perception.

“The two-step selection process offers an opportunity for Africans from across the globe to be part of the process of celebrating leaders contributing to Africa’s growth and development,” read part of a statement by ALM.

In the latest developments, Liberia’s Former President George Weah secured the title of Africa’s Political Leader of the Year, sharing the honor with Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Tanzania’s Former President Jakaya Kikwete jointly received the Africa Peace and Security Leader of the Year award with Adama Barrow, the Head of State of Gambia.

Chief Justice Martha Koome was recognized as the African Female Leader of the Year, sharing the accolade with Naseem Lari from Botswana.

The award presentation is scheduled for February 23, 2024, with the ceremony slated to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, according to ALM.

“The winners and runners-up with be formally presented with instruments of honour during the flagship annual ALM Persons of the Year Awards ceremony billed to be held 22-23 February 2024 at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Union headquarters,” ALM noted.

As per ALM, the upcoming ceremony, co-hosted by the Ethiopia Customs Commission, will feature significant highlights. These include the unveiling of the POTY Edition of the African Leadership Magazine and the Yearbook for Africa’s foremost Customs and Ports Administrators in 2024.
