Ruto Issues Directives on Construction of Railway Line Passing Through Karen
On Friday, President William Ruto issued a directive for the Rituta – Ngong railway line construction to be finalized within an eight-month timeframe.
While inaugurating the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) project in Ngong, Ruto instructed the contractor to ensure timely completion of the line, particularly the section passing through Karen, to facilitate its launch next year.
He highlighted that the contractor had proposed a 12-month timeline for project completion, a proposition that he rejected.
Furthermore, he instructed the Ministry of Transport, led by CS Kipchumba Murkomen, to procure wagons for the railway line prior to its completion.
This measure aims to guarantee the prompt initiation of train services immediately following the launch.
Once finished, the newly constructed railway line will traverse the route from Ngong to Bulbul, passing through Karen and culminating at the Nairobi terminus.
“They told me it would be done in 12 months but I told them no. You are not here for tourism, you are here to build the railway,” Ruto stated.
As per Ruto’s statement, the railway line is anticipated to cater to the daily transportation needs of 10,000 individuals.
Additionally, he mentioned the government’s intention to extend the line towards the Bomas of Kenya and subsequently connect it to the vicinity around Nyayo Stadium.
Ruto disclosed that funding for the project had been secured by the government, emphasizing its role in alleviating traffic congestion on several roads, including Ngong Road.
“I have also had engagements with the American President (Joe Biden) and we have agreed that they will give us resources to work on the Nairobi transport system.
“Already they have given us Ksh 9 billion and one of the things we will do is to move this railway line from here to Kisearian to Ngong-Bomas of Kenya,” he stated.
The Rituta – Ngong railway line represents Ruto’s inaugural Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) project.
