Ruto named one of most influential Africans in 2023
President William Ruto has been recognized as one of the prominent figures in Africa for the year 2023 by the New African magazine.
The publication highlights Ruto’s significant impact on reshaping Africa’s stance in the discourse surrounding climate change.
“In one swoop he changed the position of Africa from that of a back seat passenger in the climate crisis discussion to being a lead navigator – an outstanding achievement for the continent.”
President Ruto has emerged as a prominent advocate for addressing climate change in Africa.
Notable Kenyans joining him on the list of influential figures for 2023 include James Mwangi, CEO of Equity Group, Faith Kipyegon, the World 1500m champion, environmentalist Wanjira Mathai, and historian Chao Maina.
The recognition extends to climate strategist James Irungu, celebrity chef Ali Mandhry, filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu, and marathoner Kelvin Kiptum.
The New African magazine’s list also features other impactful African leaders like Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, Senegalese Opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, and Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank.
This accolade follows closely on the heels of President Ruto’s inclusion in the Time Magazine’s top 100 most influential global leaders a month prior.
Ruto shares the spotlight in Time Magazine with Sierra Leone’s Freetown mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Burkinabé-German architect Francis Kéré, and Ethiopian climate entrepreneur Kidus Asfaw, marking the quartet as the only Africans on Time’s climate champions list.
In January of the preceding year, President Ruto earned a spot in the top 100 most reputable Africans, as per Reputation Poll International’s classification under the Governance and Policy category.
Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera and Kenya’s Chief Justice Martha Koome also earned recognition in the Governance and Policy section and Human Rights Advocacy category, respectively.
Adding to his accolades, Ruto was named the most influential African leader on Twitter in December 2022, securing the 13th position among the 50 most influential world leaders in a report by global communications agency BCW Twiplomacy.
