Rwanda Recalls Goods Made in Kikuyu, Kenya
On the 3rd of January, Wednesday, the Rwanda Food Drugs Authority (RFDA) declared the recall of a medication produced in Kikuyu, Kenya.
In an official statement, the RFDA specified that it was withdrawing specific batches of Fluconazole 200mg tablets that had been brought into the country from Kenya.
Subsequent to a prior communication from the Authority, where they notified the Kenyan manufacturer about discoloration issues in the Fluconazole 200mg tablets, the RFDA reported that four large batches of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets imported into the country exhibited white discoloration shortly after being placed on the shelf.
“Rwanda FDA instructs all importers, central medical stores, wholesalers, RMS branches, retailers, Public and Private Health Facilities to stop the distribution of the above-mentioned batches of fluconazole 200mg tablets and return them to their suppliers for proper management,” the recall statement read in part.
Moreover, importers and suppliers of the medication were urged to provide information to the RFDA within a period of 10 days from the recall date.
Health officials and authorities in Rwanda will be inquiring with importers and suppliers about the distribution quantities of Fluconazole 200mg tablets.
This information is crucial for President Paul Kagame’s government to assess the potential adverse effects the drug might have had on the Rwandan population.
Additionally, importers and suppliers are expected to provide the Health Ministry with details regarding quantities returned and remaining stocks.
As of the time of this statement, the Kenyan Health Ministry had not declared whether the drug would undergo a recall from hospitals and pharmacies in Kenya.
There were no reports of the pink tablets exhibiting white discoloration in the Kenyan market. In February 2020, Rwanda prohibited the use of Kenyan-manufactured azithromycin dry suspension 200 mg/5ml (Zerocin) due to numerous complaints from users.
It is a common practice worldwide for countries to recall products as a measure to safeguard local consumers. For instance, in August of the previous year, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled over 100,000 pairs of jeans produced in Kenya for babies because they featured metal snaps that posed a potential risk of harm to infants.
