Senator Faults Musalia Mudavadi over Haiti Debacle
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka asserts that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula is a more suitable candidate for the position of Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) in comparison to the current officeholder, Musalia Mudavadi.
Onyonka criticises Mudavadi for his ineffective handling of the continuing Haiti crisis, which involves Kenya sending 1,000 officers as part of a multinational force to restore peace in the war-torn country.
During his appearance on Citizen TV on Tuesday morning, Onyonka expressed his belief that if Wetangula were in charge, there would be a more rational approach to arranging the controversial framework that outlines Kenya’s deployment strategy.
“Musalia (Mudavadi) is a good man. But even when the President is talking about Haiti the Minister of Interior is the one speaking and not Mudavadi because of its confusion,” said Onyonka.
“It is the minister for foreign affairs who stands up and says we are going to Haiti because of this, our agenda is this, the president has said this.”
The Senator additionally asserted that there has been a reorganisation of positions in the Cabinet.
The Senator argued that it is not appropriate for only Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to be the sole one providing updates on the structures, considering that Kenya also has a diplomatic relationship with Haiti.
“We are members of the United Nations, Kenya is going to Haiti under the auspicious of the United Nations,” he said.
“He (Kindiki) is not going to police people in Haiti, the matter becomes an international matter, it is Musalia who is supposed to be declaring and talking about what we are going to do in Haiti.”
On Tuesday morning, the crisis in the Caribbean nation worsened as Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned from office, as per the demand of gang leader Jimmy Chérizier ‘Barbeque’, causing a sense of anxiety among the population.
The United states Security Council Resolution has assigned Kenya the responsibility of leading a Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), in which Kenya and other states will deploy their officers to engage in warfare.
President William Ruto has received cautionary advice against taking action, as numerous critics have emphasised that deploying the army would essentially be exposing them to a highly dangerous situation.
